Having drawn 1-1 just two days earlier, Chelsea and Real Madrid faced off once more in Athens to determine who would lift the cup of cups.

Blues centre-half John Dempsey got the West Londoners off to the best possible start, scoring just after the half-hour mark. Six minutes later, England striker Peter Osgood, who had scored for Chelsea in the first match, picked up where he left off and doubled their lead.
Ignacio Zoco, who scored a last-gasp equaliser in the first game, almost repeated his heroics in the dying seconds when he directed a header towards the far corner. This time, however, the acrobatic Peter Bonetti denied the Spaniard, and within moments the final whistle sounded as the Chelsea celebrations overflowed on to the field.

Peter Osgood
The King of Stamford Bridge had been instrumental in Chelsea’s FA Cup success 12 months earlier, and he was at it again in Athens. He scored in both the first game and the replay, his strike in the second meeting proving decisive.
John Dempsey
The defender was to blame for Real's late equaliser in the first match, miskicking a clearance that allowed Ignacio Zoco to pounce and force the replay. However, he made amends in style by scoring the goal that set Chelsea on their way to European glory in the replay.
Peter Bonetti
'The Cat' had been helpless to prevent Zoco's late equaliser in the first match, but he was in inspired form in the replay, making several fantastic saves. One of the best denied Zoco another slice of glory as Chelsea's last line of defence stood firm.
Did You Know...?
After scoring in both the 1970 FA Cup final and the 1971 Cup-Winners' Cup final, Peter Osgood went on to score in a third consecutive final 12 months later. On this occasion, however, he finished on the losing side as the Blues lost to Stoke in the League Cup final.
Derek Smethurst, who replaced goalscorer Osgood in the final, became the first South African to win a European title and the first foreign-born player to win a European trophy with an English club.
The man who captained Chelsea in Athens, Ron Harris, is currently attempting to set a new world record for signing the most autographs in a year. The attempt started on the April 1, 2009. And no, that's not an April Fools' joke!
What Happened Next
It would be 27 years before Chelsea picked up another European trophy, winning the Cup-Winners' Cup for a second time against Stuttgart, before adding the UEFA Super Cup a couple of months later.
