Club Career
Despite being born and bred in Newcastle, Peter Beardsley's career proper actually started at Carlisle after his home-town club released him as a teenager. He joined Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps in 1982, and had a short spell at Manchester United before eventually finding his way back to Newcastle in 1983. Beardsley became a belated hero with the Toon faithful when his partnership with Kevin Keegan helped the Magpies win promotion back to the First Division in his first season.
Beardsley's career flourished back on Tyneside, to the extent that Liverpool were forced to pay a British record £1.9million to sign him in 1987. He won two League titles at Anfield before crossing Stanley Park to join fierce rivals Everton in 1991 – a move for which Reds fans blamed their board rather than the player himself.
Two years later, Beardsley made an emotional return to Newcastle for what would be his third and final spell at St James' Park, a four-year stint in which he came within a whisker of captaining the side to the 1995-96 Premier League title, only for them to be pipped at the post by Manchester United. After leaving Newcastle in 1997, Beardsley led a nomadic existence, playing for five different clubs in the space of just two seasons, before finally hanging up his boots in 1999.

International Career
Beardsley won 59 caps for England over the course of a decade, appearing at both the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals and Euro 88. He formed an impressive strike partnership with Gary Lineker, and was part of the team that came so close to glory at Italia 90. He played his last match for England in 1996 after narrowly missing out on a place in the squad for the European Championship finals.

Key Games
Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham (First Division, April 23, 1988)
Beardsley justified the record £1.9million transfer fee Liverpool had paid for his services the previous summer with arguably the most important goal of his career, the 33rd minute strike clinching his first - and Liverpool's 17th - league title.
Liverpool 4-4 Everton (FA Cup 5th round replay, February 20, 1991)
After being left on the bench for the initial tie, Beardsley was restored to Liverpool's starting line-up for the replay. The striker made the most of his recall, scoring twice and turning in an outstanding performance in one of the greatest matches in the history of the FA Cup. It also proved to be Kenny Dalglish's last game in charge of Liverpool; the Scot resigned two days later.
Arsenal 2-3 Newcastle (Premier League, September 18, 1994)
Fittingly, Beardsley produced one of his finest performances for his home-town club on the occasion of his 500th league appearance. He scored one and created two to seal Newcastle's sixth straight Premier League victory to send them four points clear at the top of the table.

Did You Know...?
Beardsley was a product of Tyneside's famous Wallsend Boys Club. Other notable alumni include Alan Shearer, Michael Carrick, Steve Bruce and Steve Watson.
Beardsley's loan spell at Manchester City made him the only player to have played for both top-flight teams in Liverpool and Manchester. He's also one of only two players to have scored for both teams in the Merseyside derby - the other being David Johnson.
Beardsley is sometimes mistakenly cited as having ended his career with Doncaster, a confusion that arose from Rovers fielding his namesake Chris during Peter's much-travelled final season.
