Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson is spending over £50,000-a-week on loan strikers to revive their season after agreeing a deal for Dave Kitson.
Boro are set to confirm in the next 24 hours that Stoke forward Kitson, 29, is joining the Riverside club until January.
Kitson is surplus to requirements at the Britannia Stadium after scoring just two Premier League goals following an ill-fated £5.5million move from Reading in July 2008.
And Gibson has agreed to pick up the forward’s whopping £30,000-a-week wages to secure him for new Boro boss Gordon Strachan.
The Scot has presided over successive 1-0 defeats since taking charge of the Championship club.
He has already brought in £16,000-a-week hitman Marcus Bent on loan from top-flight Birmingham to boost his goal-shy attack and predecessor Gareth Southgate took Caleb Folan from Hull.
Now Kitson is set to sign on loan as well as Strachan attempts to turn Boro into promotion contenders following relegation.
Kitson has endured a nightmare spell at Stoke and returned to his old club Reading on loan last term.
Had the Royals gone up they would have sign Kitson permanently but the move was scrapped when Reading lost in the play-offs.
