Roy Hodgson has made a £2m move for Le Mans centre-half Gregory Cerdan.
Hodgson is also going back with an improved £3m bid for Almeria striker Kala Uche as the Fulham boss looks to strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts.
Fulham boss Hodgson is desperate for back-up for central defensive pair Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes and 6ft 3in Cerdan fits the bill.
Cerdan, 27, who has also been watched by Blackburn, is likely to be offered a two-year deal by Fulham who have a limited budget after reaching the Europa League.
Cerdan said: "I am interested in the Premier League and if a deal happens then I will take the opportunity. But I will also stay at Le Mans without any problems."
Hodgson, who has been scared out of a move for Arsenal's Philippe Senderos by the £8m asking price, is also desperate for a striker after losing Andy Johnson for up to ten weeks through injury.
Fulham have already had a £2.1m bid for Uche turned down but the Nigerian target man is keen to come to the Premier League.
Fulham are also hopeful that Norwegian defender Hangeland will sign a new contract and pledge his future to the club after Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insisted he is not interested in signing him in this window.
