Blundering ref Matteo Simone Trefoloni reduced this game to farce by sending off the wrong player.
Aalborg defender Michael Jakobsen scythed down Giorgios Samaras with 10 minutes left only for Trefoloni to show the red card to Michael Beauchamp.
From the free-kick Shunsuke Nakamura forced a wonderful finger-tip save from keeper Karim Zaza.
Celtic wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead on the half-hour when Shaun Maloney was brought down in the box by Steve Olfers.
Trefoloni pointed to the spot but Barry Robson drilled his effort straight at Zaza.
Celtic have never won their opening Champions League group game and the jinx goes on.
Skipper Stephen McManus said: "I don't think we took our chances-it's as simple as that."
