Leon Best is happy to let his goals - rather than his clothes - do the talking.
Best is one of a trio of strikers Coventry can call on in their bid to make it to the play-offs.
He got the nod over older rival Clinton Morrison and duly scored against the club he had joined as a boy as Coventry hit four for the first time this season.
Morrison was the first to congratulate Best from the sidelines and later left the bench to replace him to play alongside Freddy Eastwood - the third member of the striking triumvirate.
Best, clad in a sober grey suit, paid tribute to his more sartorially extravagant teammates.
He said: "I am definitely learning from Clinton. In training he teaches me things all the time and I just have to watch him because he is so experienced.
"He is a character to have in the dressing-room. He turned up in his purple suit today - I don't choose his suits but we need to get hold of the person who does!
"I am not sure I will ever wear a purple suit. I am not as confident as him in that kind of way, wearing a 70s pimp suit!
"Freddy came in a long black coat as if he was going to finish someone off. By comparison I am a bit boring with my suits."
Jay Tabb set Coventry on their way when he headed home in the 19th minute and Coventry even managed to recover from Elliott Ward's dreadful penalty miss in the 32nd minute.
Leon McKenzie doubled the lead in the 34th minute before Best, who had struck apost with a golden chance, notched his first of the season two minutes after the break.
Southampton gave the home side a few wobbles after Andrew Surman pulled a goal back but Tabb made certain just before the end.
Surman admitted: "We went in with a lot of hope on the back of two wins, but when you give two goals away like that so early on you're really asking for trouble
