Youl Mawene's comical owngoal left Preston sweating over the points against a Forest side that ended the night in the bottom three.
The French defender had put his side ahead at the start of the second half with Neil Mellor adding a second.
But he gave Forest a lifeline by nodding a Lee Martin cross past his own keeper with 23 minutes left.
Earlier Darren Carter had gone close three times in the first-half for Preston.
North End boss Alan Irvine said: "We were fabulous in the second half. We went 2-0 up and looked like we could win by more. But we gave Nottingham Forest a lifeline and they nearly grabbed it."
