Billy Sharp rescued 10- man Blades with a second half equaliser as Chris Coleman's side let their hosts out of jail at Bramall Lane.
The Sky Blues squandered the lead, missed a penalty and failed to make their extra man count after Sun Jihai was sent off.
Kevin Blackwell's men looked beaten when Jihai conceded a penalty in the 48th minute. But Elliott Ward fluffed his spot-kick.
Jihai received a straight red card three minutes later after crashing into the back of Michael Mifsud.
Jay Tabb had put the Sky Blues ahead on the halfhour with an angled drive but Sharp equalised with a powerful shot past Keiren Westwood on 56 minutes.
