Johnson set for recall Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine could be tempted to recall winger Jermaine Johnson to his starting line-up for the home clash with Bristol City.

Johnson stepped off the substitutes' bench midway through the second half in Saturday's 1-1 draw at QPR and had an instant impact on the game.

The Jamaica international had missed the previous three matches due to a hamstring injury.

Defender Lewis Buxton returned to the side at Loftus Road after being sidelined since the end of January with a similar problem and came through unscathed.

Irvine, whose relegation battlers are now unbeaten in their last six league matches, has no other new injury or suspension problems.

Strikers Leon Clarke and Francis Jeffers, midfielder Michael Gray and defenders Frank Simek and Richard Hinds are all pushing for a return to the side.

Bristol City caretaker manager Keith Millen will be without goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

The 24-year-old had to be stretchered off in the closing stages of Saturday`s match with Nottingham Forest following a challenge from Nathan Tyson and looks set to miss the rest of the season with a suspected broken collarbone.

Stephen Henderson or Steve Collis will take over between the sticks at Hillsborough in Gerken's absence.

Long-term absentees Jamie McAllister (calf), James Wilson and Jamie McCombe (both knee) remain on the sidelines.

Winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce is expected to continue at left-back ahead of recent loan signing Gary Sawyer.

Daily Mirror match report by Sarah Winterburn

In-form Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard's sixth goal in six games condemned sorry Sheffield Wednesday to the relegation zone.

The Owls were on the verge of stretching their unbeaten run to six matches when Maynard was given space to drill home from 12 yards in the 81st minute.

Wednesday had dominated the second half and City's rookie goalkeeper Stephen Henderson made a series of fine saves on his full debut to deny Luke Varney and Darren Potter.

Henderson then made Maynard's winner with a long punt that was deftly controlled by the striker, who jinked past Darren Purse and Mark Beevers before firing home.

"If we had come in with a point I would have been frustrated because we certainly had enough chances to win the game," said Owls boss Alan Irvine. "So from a game when we should have won three points, we've come away with nothing.

"I still believe that if we win another two of our remaining four games, we have a good chance of staying in this division. I'm optimistic that we can win games."

Henderson's opposite number Lee Grant had kept Wednesday on terms in a dour first half, scrambling over a Paul Hartley free-kick and saving from Maynard when the striker really should have buried his effort from close range.

At the other end, both Marcus Tudgay and Leon Clarke wasted golden chances as the Hillsborough crowd became more and more restless.

Wednesday improved after the interval and pinned the Robins back in their own half - until Maynard's late winner dumped them back in the bottom three.

"Nicky can do that," said Bristol City caretaker boss Keith Millen, who confirmed he is meeting with his chairman today about his future at the club.

"He had a couple of half-chances in the first half and he was disappointed not to take them.

"He did look tired and I was thinking of taking him off, but in the back of my mind I knew he can do that to teams on the break."
