Afonso Alves looks set to end his Middlesbrough nightmare with Ajax set to complete a deal for the Brazilian striker.
Boro flop Alves cost a club record £12m when he arrived from Heerenveen in January 2008 but managed just 13 goals in two seasons at the Riverside.
The Teessiders are looking to slash their wage bill following relegation from the Premier League and boss Gareth Southgate is desperate to offload the big-earning forward.
Ajax have already held talks with the player’s representatives and are keen to wrap up the transfer as quickly as possible.
Alves enjoyed great success in Holland with Heerenveen and would be keen on a return to the Eredivisie.
The 28-year-old has already been offered a lucrative deal by Qatari side Al Saad but the chance to play for one of Europe’s most famous clubs is likely to persuade Alves to sign for Ajax.
