Boss McLeish, in charge at St Andrews since November 2007, has just 12 months left on his deal.
City are anxious to tie McLeish, 51, to a new long-term contract as he can be bought out of his existing deal for just £1million.
McLeish's stock has soared since he guided promoted Birmingham to ninth last season.
Now McLeish's lawyers are set to conclude talks next week with City supremo Peter Pannu when Birmingham return from pre-season tour in China.
McLeish said: "When we're back we're going to move it forward.
"We're going to try and get it nailed next week.
"We're due back to St Andrew's on the Thursday and I will be meeting my lawyer that day and hopefully he will see Peter on Friday."
