Barnsley boss Mark Robins may get a cash windfall this summer as the club is being targeted by an American consortium.
Tykes' owner Patrick Cyrne is considering selling up amid interest from the USA.
New cash for signings could persuade Robins to stay as his reputation grows after bossing Rotherham from 2007-2009.
Robins kept The Millers in League Two despite a 17-point deduction in August 2008 and has since established Barnsley in the Championship.
But Manchester-based ex-Coventry chairman Ray Ranson is trying to wrestle back control of the Sky Blues and wants Robins to manage City if successful.
