Arsene Wenger is tracking Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal as doubts persist over the Arsenal futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
Vidal, 24, currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen. He has been one of the Bundesliga's most consistent performers this season and ended the campaign with 10 goals.
Rated at around £15million, he can also operate at full-back and has impressed with his versatility.
Manchester City are also understood to have had the player watched, while AC Milan have had a £9m bid turned down.
Barcelona are set to step up their £27m offer for Fabregas, while Manchester United and Bayern Munich are continuing to monitor the progress of talks between Arsenal and Nasri.
Nasri has just a year left on his contract and Wenger has already declared that the French midfielder will not be allowed to go into the final year of his deal if he does not sign a new one.
Elsewhere, Porto striker Hulk is believed to be more of a back-up option that a primary target for the Gunners.
The 24-year-old hitman smashed 23 goals in 26 league games last season to spark interest from City, Spurs and Chelsea.
Although he signed a new deal in May, committing himself to Porto until 2016, Hulk has since admitted he could be tempted by the right offer.
