Stiliyan Petrov started his Leukaemia treatment today (Monday) despite claiming he still felt like training.
Aston Villa's Bulgarian midfielder is at a top London hospital following his diagnosis on Friday.
Petrov, who got an emotional reception at Villa Park watching Saturday's defeat to Chelsea, is now on steroids and injections ahead of chemotherapy.
Petrov and his wife Paulina were visited in hospital by Villa boss Alex McLeish, owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner.
McLeish said: "The chairman, chief executive and myself went to see Stiliyan on this the very first day of his recovery.
"He is determined to meet it head on and we expect that from Stan.
"He was talking really positively and actually couldn't wait to get started with his treatment. Stan himself is in amazing spirits, absolutely fantastic spirits.
"God knows what the lad is thinking in his head, but he is the captain of Aston Villa. He faces a battle but he will stand up to that battle.
"This afternoon he was talking about wishing he was coming back training because he feels he could train - that is the kind of spirit he is in.
"He has shown the commitment on the pitch. He is a pure leader and wants to lead himself through this particular tough thing.
"Everyone is here to support him and we will do everything."
