Aston Villa's John Carew set for £52,000 fine after strip club visit claims

John Carew faces a £52,000 fine from Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill after claims he was in a strip club on a match-day.
O'Neill is investigating accusations that Carew was in Birmingham's Rocket Club in the early hours of Thursday morning. He was then absent with an illness on Thursday night as Villa beat Ajax 2-1 at home in the UEFA Cup. Carew, who signed a new contract in the summer worth £52,000 a week, is now set to be hit in the pocket for his apparent breach of rules.
Villa maintain Carew's omission against Ajax was due to the forward having tests for a bug which have since proved negative. But the Norwegian international did not know on Wednesday night that he definitely wouldn't be needed by O'Neill (right) the following day.
Villa rules state players are expected to be home by 11pm the evening before a game and club officials have launched a probe.
