MacDonald gagging for win on his Villa swansong

Kevin MacDonald takes charge of Aston Villa for probably the last time tomorrow when Everton visit Villa Park.
The caretaker’s future will be decided during the international break, but owner Randy Lerner is set to look outside for the successor to Martin O’Neill.
MacDonald is desperate to get a result after Villa blew penalties in their last two games on their way to crushing defeats by Newcastle and Rapid Vienna.
John Carew missed from the spot before Villa were thrashed at Newcastle, while skipper Stiliyan Petrov’s penalty from a two-step run-up was saved against Vienna.
MacDonald said: “Stiliyan is a good technician and will have expected to score - John Carew’s penalty was slightly wider!
“They do practise them but when you get into a pressure situation who knows what goes through the emotions.
“You can imagine my words after a two-step run up and missing a penalty.
“If you are going to do that you have to make sure you don’t miss because otherwise you look foolish.”
