Auxerre moved to within two points of the Ligue 1 summit as Joao Paulo's own goal earned them a fortunate 1-0 win at Le Mans.
The Portuguese put through his own net nine minutes after the break to give the visitors their sixth straight win and keep the hosts in the bottom three, but Auxerre were holding on desperately at the end.
Three times, Le Mans saw efforts come back off the woodwork - while Anthony Le Tallec had his penalty saved by Olivier Sorin with four minutes to go.
Third-placed Auxerre could slip adrift of the top two, Bordeaux and Lyon, on Sunday when that pair play their game in hand.
Monaco fell to fourth after managing only a goalless draw at home to Grenoble, who finally claimed their first point of the season.
Kevin Gameiro and Marama Vahirua both scored twice as Lorient hammered Boulogne 5-0 to keep the pressure on the pace-setters.
The pair put the home side 4-0 up in the space of 25 minutes either side of half-time - before Morgan Amalfitano completed the rout in injury time.
Meanwhile, Montpellier ended a run of two straight defeats with a 1-1 draw away to Valenciennes, Paris St Germain were booed off by their own fans, after Nice claimed a late winner against the run of play to beat the capital club 1-0 and flu-hit St Etienne pulled off a surprise 1-0 win at Nancy, thanks to Dimitri Payet's 70th-minute winner.
Elsewhere, Lens moved out of the relegation zone as goalkeeper Vedran Runje helped them to a 2-1 success at Sochaux.
