Gary Cahill's World Cup dream is in tatters after he was ruled out for the rest of the season because of a blood clot on his arm.
The Bolton centre-half spent Saturday night in hospital when Wanderers' alarmed medical staff saw the swelling on his arm.
He was diagnosed with a blood clot and has been put on a course of blood-thinning medication.
Doctors are so concerned about his condition that they have ordered him to avoid all contact sport and Bolton boss Coyle fears he will not play again this season.
The news is a huge blow to Cahill as the defender had harboured hopes of forcing his way into Fabio Capello's squad for South Africa.
It is also a serious setback for Wanderers in their fight to avoid relegation as Cahill is the cornerstone of their defence.
