Bolton are trying to save Gary Cahill's season - by seeking a second opinion on the blood clot problem that has rocked the player and his club.
Wanderers are investigating the possibility of centre half Cahill recovering without using powerful drugs that would mean he is out of the game for up to six months.
Cahill has been to hospital to dissolve the clot in his arm but Bolton are now checking whether there is way round the problem by other means.
The young defender is desperate to play again this season to help Bolton and cling to the chance of making Fabio Capello's squad for South Africa.
Boss Owen Coyle wants to be sure Cahill makes a full recovery but the club are looking into alternative ways of getting their highly-rated star back into action ahead of schedule.
