Blazing Bolton want referee Rob Styles axed from the Premier League list after his howler handed Manchester United a crucial penalty.
Styles pointed to the spot after Jlloyd Samuel cleanly tackled Cristiano Ronaldo, who got up to fire his side ahead and on the way to a 2-0 derby victory.
Now Bolton will make a formal complaint against Styles and ask the authorities to leave him off the list next weekend - or even longer. Wanderers believe his slip-up was worse than the one made by Mark Halsey, who was 'rested' after he sent off John Terry in Chelsea's win at Manchester City.
Bolton also claim that Ronaldo himself admitted he should never have won a penalty. One senior source revealed: "If you can be sent to Chester for a decision like Halsey's it should be the same for a mistake with a penalty." Bolton will speak to referees' supremo Keith Hackett about the incident.
Styles has 'previous' for blunders. He gave Chelsea a soft equaliser at Liverpool a year ago and penalised Manchester City when they went to Birmingham.
Bolton captain Kevin Nolan revealed how Ronaldo - for so long branded a diver - admitted it was the wrong decision.
"Ronaldo was on the floor saying 'I didn't want a penalty'," said Nolan. "The ref dug United out of a big hole with that decision."
