Nicky Barmby saluted his play-off contenders after hailing this thumping win as the ‘best’ of their 10-match unbeaten run.
An own goal by Kevin McNaughton and second half strikes from James Chester and Aaron McLean ended a five-game spell of draws.
It was only the fourth win of that unbeaten run – but the convincing victory in the Welsh capital puts Hull into the top six.
Barmby said: “On the whole, it was the best performance of our run. We have had some good 45 minutes but we finally put it together.
“Some of our football, the chances we created and movement of our front players was pleasing.
“It’s a psychological boost to move into the top six but we will keep our feet on the ground and see where it takes us.”
Cardiff drop to seventh spot after the heaviest home loss of the season, and manager Malky Mackay was fuming with the officials for disallowing Ben Turner’s first-half header with the score at 1-0.
Mackay said: “It was a horrendous and incredible decision.
"I will send the DVD clip in to the Football Association, because the officials need to become better.”
