John Terry admits playing in the Champions League this season was a major factor in his decision to stay at Chelsea.
And the centre-half believes England boss Fabio Capello will be relieved he opted to stay at Stamford Bridge to play at thevery highest level, ahead of the World Cup in South Africa next summer.
"To be in the Champions League is massive," said the England captain. "You never know what Mr Capello's response would have been hadI not been playing Champions League football.
"I'm delighted and I'm sure he's happy. We're looking really good with England - it could be a good year for us.
"I'm just hoping the season starts really well with the national team, and that no one picks up any injuries with England this season, particularly in the late part of the season. It could be really good."
Terry insisted that getting an improved contract was not the main issue for him as he weighed up the £250,000-a-week offer from Manchester City.
However, Chelsea are expected to give him a rise and make him their bestpaid player ahead of Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack on £150,000 a week.
Terry has spent the last two weeks in America touring with Chelsea under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, and he said: "Carlo has been fantastic.
"I know it is only early days but he has been really good - he knows the modern game very well."
England routed Slovenia 7-1 to complete a record win in the UEFA under-19 tournament in Donetsk. They will now take on France in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
