Didier Drogba was given a brain scan after being knocked out cold in a sickening mid-air collision with Norwich keeper John Ruddy.
Chelsea talisman Drogba was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and discharged at his own request after being diagnosed with mild concussion.
And Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas thanked both sets of players, and his own medical staff, for ensuring Drogba received prompt attention following the horrible clash with blameless Ruddy, who was sent off 16 minutes later.
Villas-Boas said: “I am grateful to my players, Norwich players and the medical staff for reacting so quickly to a potentially dangerous situation.”
Attempting to punch clear, Ruddy inadvertently struck Drogba as the pair contested a high ball into the Norwich box.
Drogba’s evacuation from Stamford Bridge on a stretcher was such a painstaking process that it resulted in 11 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match.Michael Calvin's Big Match Verdict: New manager, same old Torres problem for Chelsea
