AC Milan will make a £18million bid to entice Michael Essien from Chelsea this summer.
San Siro boss Massimiliano Allegri feels the Ghanaian powerhouse would be the ideal addition to his squad and beef up the Serie A giants for another assault on the Champions League.
Milan will take the Italian title for the first time in seven years if they win at Roma on Saturday but Allegri is already thinking ahead.
He has told Milan directors Adriano Galliani and Ariedo Braida Essien must be the club’s prime summer transfer target.
Essien, a £24million signing from Lyon in 2005, has three years left on his current Chelsea deal, has no wish to leave London and believes himself to still be a big part of the club’s long-term plans.
But Milan will not take no for an answer and may seek to persuade Chelsea to sell by offering players in a potential swap deal.
