Carlisle have signed Manchester United youngster James Chester on a five-month loan deal.
The 21-year-old defender, who impressed in Sunday's 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Hibs, has been drafted in by manager Greg Abbott after his bid to sign Sunderland's Jean-Yves M'voto failed.
"We have agreed with him and Manchester United to have him until December 31. If he does exceptionally well he might want to go higher; if he is enjoying himself he might stay a bit longer," Abbott told the News and Star.
"I have known about James for a couple of years," he added.
"I followed him when he went to Peterborough on loan and then when he went to Plymouth. It's common knowledge that since Danny Livesey's injury we have been looking for the right type to go alongside Ian Harte. With James we have maybe found that one."
Chester was Manchester United's reserve player of the year last season.
