Dean Windass wants to replace Mike Newell as the new Grimsby manager.
Newell has been sacked by the League Two strugglers following a poor start to the season which has seen them slump to second from bottom of the table.
Club directors will now start the search for a replacement and Windass is a keen on taking over.
The former Hull striker was Colin Todd’s assistant at Darlington until the duo were sacked last month.
But he is desperate to return to the dug-out as quickly as possible and has let the Mariners know he wants to be considered.
