Depressed Ashley Cole has told pals he may quit football.
The Chelsea star, dealing with the collapse of his marriage to pop star wife Cheryl Cole, is at a Biarritz rehab centre recuperating from the broken ankle he sustained three weeks ago.
The fact that his divorce was sparked a by a series of love cheat exposes has piled more pressure on the 29 -year-old England international.
Cole’s confidantes admit he is in turmoil and has talked about walking away from football. They believe they will eventually persuade him to battle on.
And Cole has been left in no doubt about the level of support he will receive from inside Stamford Bridge.
Club owner Roman Abramovich and the club hierarchy have spoken to him to refute last week’s claims that he would be fined for breaches of club discipline and even transferred for bringing his club into disrepute.
Abramovich has personally made it clear to Cole that no sanctions will be taken and he will not be sold or fined. In fact, the Russian billionaire has offered to provide counselling and financial support to his troubled star if required.
The Chelsea owner and his board were furious about spin from inside their club that Cole was not wanted.
Bruce Buck, the Chelsea chairman, called Cole to extend his personal apology for the way the situation had been handled.
