Derby County full-back Gareth Roberts plunged Doncaster Rovers deeper into relegation trouble – but backed his old pals to escape the drop.
Roberts played for Rovers for four years but showed them no mercy by scoring his first goal for Derby on his former stomping ground.
It was his first goal for two years and it proved to be decisive as Rovers were cut further adrift in the bottom three.
Roberts said: “I’ve still got a lot of friends at Doncaster. I’ve played alongside a lot of the players and know all of the staff. Even the chef came out to see me to say hello.
“There’s a lot of people I’m in touch with.
“I hope they can get out of trouble, I really do. I don’t want to see them go down.
“They’ve got some big games coming up, but they have got some good players and if they dig in, they can get out of it.”
Roberts’ second-half strike doubled Derby’s advantage after Theo Robinson put the Rams ahead with his 10th goal of the season.
El Hadji Diouf pulled back a goal but it wasn’t enough to maintain Donny’s five-game unbeaten run.
Midfielder John Oster said: “It’s disappointing, considering our results we have had this performance creep up on us.
“Hopefully, this is just a little hiccup. Every game now is a must-win.”
