Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is running for the French presidency.
The moody striker, who has been in acting since his retirement, told Paris newspaper Liberation he was taking the first step to challenge Nicolas Sarkozy by collecting the signatures of 500 elected officials to gain their support.
Cantona is already canvassing French mayors to ask for their backing.
Cantona describes himself as an "engaged citizen" and told Liberation: "This engagement obliges me to speak, more earnestly than usual, but also with a keen sense of my responsibility, at a time when our country faces difficult choices which will be decisive for its future.”
He added that he was concerned about a lack of jobs for young people and about social injustices, which he described as "too numerous, too violent, too systematic”.
If the 45-year-old collects 500 backers, he will be able to take part in a first round of voting this April.
But only the two biggest vote-winners - likely to be Sarkozy and Socialist Francois Hollande - will go through to the final round in May.
Last year Cantona called on the French to push for financial reform by withdrawing all their money from the nation's banks. But his day of action flopped when few took part.
