Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi is out of football for six months, wrecking his European Championship dreams.
The Villarreal and former Manchester United star has re-injured his right knee ligaments in training and needs surgery for the second time this season.
Rossi has been sidelined since October and Villarreal have struggled in his absence, dropping to 17th in the league and bowing out of the Champions League after losing all six group games.
The 25-year-old American-born forward scored 32 goals in all competitions for Villarreal last season and has scored six goals in 27 appearances for the Italian national team.
Italy open Euro 2012 on June 10 against defending champions Spain.
