Manchester City face a tough Europa League group stage having been drawn against Italian giant Juventus, Austrian champions Salzburg and Poland's title winners Lech Posnan.
Liverpool have an easier task against Steaua Bucharest, Napoli and Dutch side Utrecht.
City's draw pits Roberto Mancini against the club who were interested in making him their new manager last March.
Juve have twice been European champions and were three times victors in this competition in its former guise as the UEFA Cup. They won the 1977 trophy after knocking City out in the first round.
Liverpool's draw includes 1986 European champions Steaua, 1989 UEFA Cup winners Napoli and Utrecht, who knocked out Celtic in the play-offs and whose striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel has been linked with a move to Anfield.
