Sunderland slipped to a poor defeat in Ricky Sbragia's first game as their permanent manager.

Mikel Arteta curled home a 10th-minute free-kick and saw a volley deflect in off Danny Collins after another set- piece went straight into the wall (27).

Carlos Edwards tested Tim Howard from long range but Dan Gosling rounded off the win after Joleon Lescott squared the ball to him in the box (83).
