Everton boss David Moyes was left with a bad case of the blues as his side slipped into relegation trouble - and racked up more injuries.
Moyes was fuming with the way his team lost two early goals at Bolton and then ran out of steam and bodies in the closing stages to drop below rivals Bolton.
The Goodison chief was gloomy after seeing Johnny Heitinga limp off with a sore foot while Tim Cahill picked up a knock too to add to the mounting casualty list at his club.
Defeat hurt as much as the injuries with Moyes admitting: "We should never have been 2-0 down and we were. But I thought it was there for us after that.
"It was a long way back but we were in the ascendancy after we scored the first. However we ran out of steam and energy with 20 minutes to go."
Moyes wanted to make changes as many of his side laboured late on after their midweek mauling by Benfica, but he had one of the youngest benches in his club's history.
Everton were without striker Yakubu from the trip to Lisbon, while Leighton Baines and Joseph Yobo did not make the line-up that looked short at the back - and so it proved.
Moyes will make a head count before the next games with Tottenham in the Carling Cup and Aston Villa in the league before the Benfica return.
However the news looks bad and he said: "There are one or two knocks but I will have to wait and check them up in the morning."
Heitninga hobbled off with a mixture of cramp and a foot problem. Cahill pulled up dramatically after going into a tackle and was a virtual spectator late on.
