Sunderland FA Cup hero Jimmy Montgomery says Niall Quinn deserves to be remembered as a club "legend".
The 1973 Cup winner, who was recently appointed as a club ambassador, told the club's official website, www.safc.com: "Niall is the definition of a true club legend.
"I remember when he first came in as chairman, he sat down with me and a couple of members of the Former Players' Association committee.
"Niall said he would hand the club over when the time was right, and he has fulfilled everything he said he would do. He has been a revelation.
"It's not just his stature, but the way he presents himself. Everyone was in awe of him and followed him, not only when he was a player, but when he joined the board too.
"Sunderland AFC is in superb hands with a fantastic team behind the scenes. They will take the club that step further.
"This club has progressed massively under Niall. He is a fantastic ambassador for Sunderland, there's no doubt about that.
"When he comes back to visit, there will be massive adulation, and rightly so."
