Chelsea are locked in a Mexican stand-off over Fernando Torres.
Liverpool want an offer of at least £50million before they will consider selling the Spanish World Cup winner.
But Chelsea, whose initial £35m bid was rejected on Friday night, are confident they can get him on the cheap, especially after Kop fans turned on their idol yesterday.
With the transfer window set to shut at 11pm tomorrow night – by which time Torres must be signed if he is to be eligible for Chelsea’s Champions League campaign – it’s a case of who blinks first.
On Friday Liverpool said Torres was not for sale. Yesterday, though, club insiders were saying Chelsea would have to “substantially increase their offer” - football shorthand for “give us £50m and he’s yours.”
Torres handed in a transfer request on Friday and has told pals in Spain that his time at Anfield is over.
Fan websites and message boards yesterday were awash with anti-Torres feeling, with many Kop fans accusing him of betraying Liverpool.
