Forbes confident 'Well can improve

Midfielder Ross Forbes is confident Motherwell can produce an improved display in Iceland next week after his goal proved the difference in their Europa League opener against Breidablik.

Forbes was one of several Motherwell players who passed up decent first-half opportunities and they were almost made to pay when two crosses into the box earned the part-timers glorious chances in the opening moments of the second period. But the 21-year-old curled a cross into the far corner in the 63rd minute to earn Motherwell a deserved 1-0 victory in front of 5,990 fans at Fir Park.

"That was our first competitive game, that's us getting back into the swing of things. We will be a bit sharper and fresher next week," said the Scotland Under-21 international.

"We only saw a video of them a few hours before the game, it was hard to get footage of them. But now we know what they're all about and we can prepare better.

"We created enough chances to have a bigger margin of victory.

"Especially in the first half, we had five or six chances which we should have taken.

"Hopefully these chances will come next week and we're confident knowing that they haven't got an away goal."

Forbes admitted there was an element of fortune about his goal, with debutant Gary Smith just failing to convert an inswinging cross that beat the visiting goalkeeper and nestled in the far corner of the net.

Forbes, who took his European tally to four goals, said: "It was a cross but I try to get them on target."
