Hat-trick hero Clint Dempsey admits his road to the top level has been Rocky – but now his boss Martin Jol claims he has the Eye of the Tiger.
Dempsey scored the first hat-trick of his career to down the Addicks and hopes it is the first step to winning a trophy.
And Jol believes Dempsey’s winning mentality stems from his tough upbringing in the States.
Jol said: “He is American, so he is a great sportsman. He trains hard and looks after himself.
“In every training session he wants to win and he has the eye of the tiger.”
Dempsey added: “I didn’t follow the FA Cup because I didn’t have a lot of channels growing up to watch the football over in Europe.
“But since I’ve been over here you look on TV and see the goals and know it’s a chance to win something special.
“In your career you want to win things and hopefully maybe one day I can do just that.”
Damien Duff’s deflected strike late on made it 4-0 and gave the game a scoreline which flattered the hosts.
Charlton midfielder Bradley Pritchard said: “I was playing for Hayes against my old team Tamworth [in the third round] last year.
“We had 250 fans there. My girlfriend wouldn’t come because it was too cold. She was here today... shock!”
