Martin Jol admits he has taken a risk in replacing Bobby Zamora with Pavel Pogrebnyak.
Jol hopes to obtain a work permit for Pogrebnyak this week to clear the Russian striker to make his debut against Stoke on Saturday.
He has signed the Russian international on a six-month contract from Stuttgart, where he managed just 15 goals in 68 Bundesliga appearances in three seasons, and the Fulham boss admits he is out of form.
However, Jol said: “He’s not had a great couple of years, but if he had we wouldn’t have got him.
“I spoke to (Russia boss) Dick Advocaat and (predecessor) Guus Hiddink about him and they told me he’s got 45 caps and he’s had some great spells.
“It’s a very good opportunity for him and us, but he has to prove it now.”
