New Fulham boss Mark Hughes is willing to sanction the signing of Luke Young from Aston Villa but has snubbed Steve Sidwell.
Hughes' Fulham predecessor Roy Hodgson teed up a £2million deal to sign Villa midfielder Sidwell.
The star, 27, signed from Chelsea in July 2008 for £5m, just needed a medical before moving to Craven Cottage after Villa accepted Fulham's bid.
Now Hughes has decided against signing the former Arsenal trainee and Sidwell faces a battle to get into Villa's side.
But Hughes is set to approve another transfer initiated by Hodgson for Villa right-back Young.
Liverpool manager Hodgson also tried to then take Young with him to Anfield but the defender rejected the switch in a bid to move back to London.
Ex-Spurs trainee Young, 31, is expected to compete with John Paintsil for the full-back berth at the Cottage and can also play left-back.
