Germany and Hanover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke was killed last night after being hit by a train.
“First indications point to suicide,” said a police spokesman.
Enke, 32, who also played for Borussia Moenchengladbach, Benfica and Barcelona, competed for the German national team goalkeeping jersey with Rene Adler, of Bayer Leverkusen.
He made his international debut aged 31 and won eight caps.
Enke had missed Germany's last four matches with a virus but returned for his club at the weekend after almost two months out.
His national team colleagues learned the news after training in Bonn yesterday.
“We are all shocked," said Germany's general manager Oliver Bierhoff. “We are lost for words.”
German football legend Franz Beckenbauer said: “I am deeply saddened by this. When you receive such news all other things do not matter.”
“This can and must not be true,'' said Schalke 04 striker Kevin Kuranyi. “Robert was a fantastic guy.”
Enke's daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves a wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the coupled had adopted.
Hannover president Martin Kind said Enke had been "unstable" recently.
