Kevin Nolan turned in a captain's display with a first-half double as Newcastle raced into a 3-0 lead over Sunderland.
The midfielder put the home side ahead with a 26th-minute overhead kick and then doubled his tally from close range eight minutes later before Shola Ameobi added an injury-time penalty as the previously miserly Black Cats' defence cracked once again.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had earlier pulled off fine saves to deny Andy Carroll and Joey Barton.
Newcastle boss Chris Hughton welcomed back his big guns as Sunderland counterpart Steve Bruce named an unchanged team for this afternoon's derby clash.
Hughton restored the nine men he rested for Wednesday night's Carling Cup defeat by Arsenal to the starting line-up, and there was a surprise place on the bench for defender Steven Taylor following his recovery from a shoulder injury.
Sunderland's record signing Asamoah Gyan was once again named among the substitutes as Bruce kept faith with the men who fought out a 1-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend.
The home side went into the 143rd Tyne-Wear derby having lost only three of the 16 Barclays Premier League encounters between the two sides, although the Black Cats arrived defending a seven-game unbeaten league run.
Newcastle went straight on to the offensive as the game kicked off amid a cacophony of sound, and they won a second minute corner when Phil Bardsley headed Joey Barton's free-kick behind.
Andy Carroll met Barton's cross, but under pressure from keeper Simon Mignolet, did not make good enough contact and his effort was easily cleared.
Cheik Tiote tried to recycle the loose ball, but lost possession to Steed Malbranque, who sent Danny Welbeck racing towards goal from his own half, although his shot was deflected wide by the covering Jose Enrique.
Jordan Henderson blasted a long-range eighth-minute effort just over, although Tim Krul was never unduly concerned as he watched the ball clear his crossbar.
Mike Williamson had to make a timely intervention to prevent Darren Bent from making the most of Ahmed Elmohamady's flick-on two minutes later, but Bardsley had to be just as alert at the other end after Carroll has raced away from Lee Cattermole.
Williamson found himself engaged in a 16th-minute foot race with Bent in pursuit of Titus Bramble's clearance, but the striker was penalised for pushing.
Kevin Nolan passed up a promising 21st-minute opportunity when he miskicked after Henderson had failed to cut out Barton's cross.
Mignolet was called upon three minutes later to get his fingertips to Carroll's bullet header, with Fabricio Coloccini unable to direct the rebound at goal.
Newcastle were starting to establish a momentum and Mignolet was in action two minutes later to palm away Barton's fiercely-struck drive.
But the Magpies took the lead from the resulting corner when Williamson got up well to knock down Barton's cross and Nolan sent an overhead kick into the roof of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Sunderland might have been level within two minutes when Welbeck broke down the left and squared for Cattermole, but the former Middlesbrough midfielder was stretching as he met the ball and only succeeded in steering it well wide.
Nolan had another chance on the half-hour when Shola Ameobi played him into space, although his left-foot effort flew wide of the target.
However, he was not found wanting with 34 minutes gone when Carroll's scuffed volley found him in acres of space and he fired past the advancing Mignolet.
Bruce, who has set great store by his 4-5-1 formation in recent weeks, abandoned it five minutes before the break when he withdrew Elmohamady and sent on record signing Gyan, switching to 4-4-2 in a desperate search for a way back into the game.
But their hopes were dashed in injury time when Nedum Onuoha felled Jonas Gutierrez inside the area and Ameobi stepped up to fire the penalty low to Mignolet's right and into the bottom corner.
