Harry Redknapp to face legal proceedings over tax

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is to face proceedings over a tax issue, his solicitors said tonight in a statement issued by the football club.
Solicitors BCL Burton Copeland said: "Harry Redknapp is extremely surprised and disappointed to have been informed that HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs) intend to institute proceedings against him in the week commencing 11 January 2010.
"We believe that the decision to commence proceedings will, in due course, be shown to have been totally misconceived."
A spokesman for the club added: "The club considers this matter to be a private, tax issue which pre-dates Harry's employment with the club and which is not related to football matters. His position remains unaffected and he has the full support of the club."
Redknapp, 62, has enjoyed considerable success at Tottenham since taking over there when they were struggling in the League early last season and inspiring a transformation at the club.
They are bidding for a top four finish and won again today, 2-0 at Blackburn.
The former West Ham manager won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in May 2008.
A spokesman for HMRC referred calls to the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office. No one there was immediately available to comment.
