How England's players rated in Germany
Published 00:00 20/11/08 By Compiled By John Cross
JAMES
Was a spectator for long periods against a German team so bad that England fans were chanting: Are you Scotland in disguise?
RATING: 6/10
JOHNSON
Fought off injury problems to play and looked solid. Rarely got a chance to get forward but showed he is a good deputy.
RATING: 7/10
TERRY
Had an awful mix-up with sub keeper Carson to gift Germany an equaliser.
But made up for it with a superb late headed winner.
RATING: 8/10
UPSON
Made it a night he will never forget by scoring his first goal for England to cement his England place. Looked a bit suspect in the air.
RATING: 7/10
BRIDGE
Had his best game for England for some time. Has looked suspect defensively in the past but did not give Germany a look-in.
RATING: 7/10
WRIGHT-PHILLIPS
If only he had a final ball to match his approach play. He worked hard, got into good positions but delivery was poor. Hit the post late on.
RATING: 7/10
CARRICK
Impressive return after a 15-month absence. The only problem was that both central midfielders sat too deep.
RATING: 7/10
BARRY
Outstanding. He looked a class apart against the German midfield, never gave the ball away and showed great vision.
RATING: 8/10
DOWNING
His corner led to Matthew Upson's goal and he also had a fierce shot well saved. He was a real positive for England on the night.
RATING: 8/10
DEFOE
Should have scored early on and was lucky not to be penalised for a foul before Upson's opener. But looked sharp in first half.
RATING: 7/10
AGBONLAHOR
Showed lightning pace but did not get too many openings.
His distribution was sometimes poor but showed promise he can make it at the top.
RATING: 7/10
England substitutes:
Scott Carson (James 45) The West Brom goalkeeper got caught in a nightmare mix-up with John Terry which led to equalizer 5
Darren Bent (Defoe 45) The in-form Spurs striker made some impressive angled runs but mis-hit a great chance to make it 2-0 6
Ashley Young (Agbonlahor 77) 6
Germany line-up: Adler (Wiese 45), Friedrich, Mertesacker, Westermann, Compper, Schweinsteiger, Jones (Marin 45), Rolfes, Trochowski, Klose (Hlemes 45), Gomez.
