Jose Mourinho wants Michael Owen in a swap deal which would see Honduran striker David Suazo move from Inter Milan to Newcastle this month.
The England striker is refusing to sign a new contract at St James' Park and will be available on a free transfer in the summer.
Inter president Massimo Moratti, a long-time admirer of Owen who tried to sign him after the 1998 World Cup, sees this as a final chance to land the 29-year-old former European Player of the Year.
Suazo, also 29, was voted Serie A foreigner of the year along with Kaka in 2006- 07 and signed for Inter for £10million.
But he is not rated by Mourinho and has been loaned out to Portuguese side Benfica this season, where he has scored five goals in nine games.
Everton and Aston Villa have also expressed interest in Suazo who is an international teammate of Wigan midfielder Wilson Palacios.
