Mascherano slams Liverpool for 'lies' about his family

Javier Mascherano has slammed former club Liverpool for lying about the reasons for his protracted transfer to Barcelona.
It was alleged that the Argentine midfielder wanted to leave Merseyside to be closer to his wife and young child, who remained in Buenos Aries for much of his stay in England, but Mascherano refuted those claims yesterday,
"When they started to involve my family and to say things that didn't make sense, I obviously suffered," he said.
Mascherano then claimed that Liverpool reneged on a deal struck last summer in which he agreed to stay at Anfield for another season provided he was then allowed to leave should a suitable bid come in:
"They'd promised me something for a whole year and they never fulfilled their promise. And that didn't have anything to do with my family or anything else.
"When you read or hear lies, you obviously get angry."
Mascherano did have some nice words to say about his time at Liverpool - although Anfield bosses will be dismayed that they were all reserved for former manager Rafael Benitez:
"Rafa taught me tactics. He's one of the coaches who have taught me the most in my career and I'm very grateful to him. He was fundamental.
"He gave me the chance to join Liverpool. He had confidence in me at a time when, perhaps, nobody would have dreamed of giving me an opportunity.
"I'll be grateful to him all my life."
