John Barnes' Diary: bid for signed Arsenal, West Ham and Fulham shirts
Published 11:55 08/09/08 By By Dan Silver, Mirror.co.uk
Mirror.co.uk has teamed up with John Barnes' new football charity Score Ethiopia to offer you the chance to bid for signed football shirts from every Premier League football club in the country.
Each day this week, the former England legend will be blogging for Mirror.co.uk as he embarks on a Van Dash around all 20 top flight clubs to pick up the shirts.
Then you can take part in Mirror.co.uk's special eBay auction to bid for the shirts that John collects, with the proceeds going to the Score Ethiopia charity to raise funds for water amenities, schools and football facilities in the Gondar region of Ethiopia.
It will be a lot of fun, will benefit a great cause, and you might even end up with a unique collectors' item at the end of it.
John's Barnes' diary, Friday, September 5th:
Well today had some way to go to live up to yesterday!
The impressive Emirates stadium was the first visit on our mission around London. We were there just to pick up the signed shirt as international duty meant a lot of players were away, but what a great surprise when we were met by one of the true Arsenal legends - Charlie George (still with the same haircut!). Charlie took us round to the cannons at the front of the stadium, a great feature and call back to their days as the Woolwich Arsenal. A few quick photos and interviews and we were back in the van.
Upton Park was next on the list. A bit awkward with the news of Alan Curbishley's exit plus the news cameras on the look for the arrival of new suitors - not sure I looked ready for an interview with my bright green Score Ethiopia top on! Time was against us after the shirt presentation so it was across the city to Fulham.
Fulham would be our last call of the day after seeing Harry Redknapp for Portsmouth and Graeme Le Saux for Chelsea yesterday. What should have been an hour to an hour and a half journey turned out to be closer to two and a half hours! Now I know why I live up in Merseyside! With Soccer Aid going on, the Fulham executives were all at the training ground, so all we had to do was pick up the shirt and finish the media work.
What an eventful week. I've seen some old friends, met some fantastic players and been completely overwhelmed by the generosity and support from the Premiership clubs that have come on board. I hope all the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes from the Van Dash team and the clubs and players pays off and we raise a good amount for Lalibela!
Good bidding!
About Score Ethiopia
Score Ethiopia is a partnership between Wash & Go shampoo and educational charity Link Ethiopia launched by John Barnes in 2007, after he visited the town of Lalibela and experienced Ethiopia's critical needs as well as the people's passion to play football even in the face of adversity.
He said: "All over the world people play football with whatever they can get their hands on. A can, rolled up clothes or a milk carton full of stones make a ball.
"But rarely have I witnessed such passion for the 'beautiful game' as I did in Ethiopia. The sport brings communities together, promotes health and well being.
"However, Ethiopia is a beautiful yet very poor country. Wash & Go's Score Ethiopia is looking to raise as much money as possible to deliver vital amenities and football facilities.
"A little money can make a lot of Ethiopian's happy!"
