John Terry has agreed a new five-year contract worth a staggering £50 million to commit his long-term future to Chelsea.
Terry’s existing deal had three years to run and was estimated to be worth around £140,000 a week.
Under the terms of his new arrangement Terry will pocket around £170,000 a week and become the highest paid player at the club.
The club and country captain who was torn between staying at Stamford Bridge and moving to Manchester City during the summer has now conclusively brought speculation about his future to a complete end.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was forced to personally intervene to stop his prized asset from being enticed away by his cash rich Premier League rivals.
The 28-year-old defender was closer to a move to City than people think and during the heat of many discussions Terry did threaten to hand in a written transfer request to pave the way for the move to Eastland’s.
City were prepared to offer him a mind-blowing deal worth around £250,00 a week to sever his 14-year links with the London giants.
Chelsea have taken the decision to keep the deal quiet for fear of a negative response from supporters and critics.
Some have accused the England skipper of delibetrately using City to broker a new deal for himself.
