Kaizer Chiefs 0-4 Man United: Reds back on trophy trail

Lifting the Vodacom Challenge may not be much to boast about, but it seems the hunger of Manchester United's trophy hunters has not been satisfied.

The Premier League and European champions have hit the ground winning on their South African tour and they head to Nigeria to face Portsmouth today with more silverware to exhibit in the Old Trafford museum.

Goals from Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, teenager debutant Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell delighted a sell-out crowd at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

And while Sir Alex Ferguson has so far failed to add to his squad, youngsters like Cleverley, Campbell, Danny Simpson, Chris Eagles, Lee Martin, Craig Cathcart, Rodrego Possebon, Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson have shown that they want the chance to realise their potential.

Ferguson said: "This experience will have done the younger players good. Evans was instrumental in keeping Sunderland up when he went out on loan last season and Campbell was just as important in helping get Hull City promoted.

"They all have potential, but this season they must try to force themselves into the first-team squad on a more regular basis."

Bigger and better things may indeed beckon for this latest flock of Fergie fledglings, but they will have still enjoyed the experience of picking up winners' medals.

Last Saturday, United needed an equaliser from Eagles in Cape Town to force a draw against a Chiefs team intent on inflicting damage to body and reputation.

Then the Reds travelled to Durban to beat Orlando Pirates on Tuesday before the Chiefs' win over their bitter Johannesburg rivals set up this rematch in the final.

This time the the gulf in class was obvious.

Rooney, who spent most of last week's game waging a running battle with the Chiefs defence, needed just four minutes to show that he was in a much more productive mood with a clever chip that landed on the roof of the net.

United went ahead in the 40th minute when Martin's cross from the left found Ryan Giggs, who thrashed a rising half-volley into the top corner.

The South Africans continued to wind up Rooney. One firsthalf challenge by Nahayo Valery was evil in its intent and Jonathan Quartey sent him flying early in the second half with a wild kick that earned him a booking.

Ferguson said: "Wayne took a heavy blow just above the knee, but he should be OK."

Rooney exacted full revenge in the 56th minute by bursting clear on to Danny Simpson's pass and scoring with a precision shot.

Six minutes later, sub Cleverley guided Rooney's knock-down into the bottom corner, before Campbell completed the rout four minutes from time with a shot across Chiefs keeper Khune Itumeleng.
