Kenny Dalglish has confirmed Steven Gerrard is out for the rest of the season – but refused to be drawn on his skipper’s long-term future.
Gerrard has been out of action for almost two months with a groin problem, and had an operation in early March.
Liverpool boss Dalglish said: “We still don’t know definitively how bad the injury is, but we do know Steven won’t be involved again this season.”
Dalglish conceded he does not yet know if there will be any long-term implications for the England midfielder.
Gerrard will now undergo tests to determine whether he requires further surgery. But he needs to find a solution soon to the groin problems that have dogged his career since he was a teenager.
“Until we find out from the specialists, it would be wrong for us to say what the situation is or mislead anybody over the extent of the injury,” Dalglish said.
“We can’t yet speak of long-term concerns. It would be irresponsible of us to pre-judge anything.”
Liverpool entertain Manchester City at Anfield on Monday night with the prospect of European football fast receding.
Dalglish added: “This football club is not ready to settle for sixth place as good enough, but we need to improve on the pitch to aim higher.”
