Luiz Felipe Scolari spent a night in hospital with kidney stones - and ended up with a heavy heart.
Scolari watched in agony as Chelsea's title challenge suffered another blow against West Ham.
Their stuttering home form continued as Blues old boy Gianfranco Zola's side earned a draw.
"It hurts in my heart now," said the Chelsea boss who spent Saturday night in hospital, joking his doctor was a West Ham fan and wanted to keep him in to miss yesterday's game which ended with the Blues being jeered off.
Scolari said: "The doctor is a West Ham fan but he helped me and the nurse was very good too. They say it's a normal thing but it didn't feel normal and they say it hurts more than childbirth!
"I understand what the fans gave to us at the final whistle. But they need to understand that the players try to do their best every time.
"We play better away from home. But we need to win one, two or three games at home to help us. If I think about the games in which we have dropped points then I agree with the fans."
Scolari was unhappy Chelsea were denied a penalty after Lucas Neill tripped Frank Lampard in the penalty box in the 88th minute.
"I think it was a penalty but I've not had a penalty in this competition this season," said Scolari. West Ham defender Neill insisted: "There was contact but I just couldn't get out of the way."
Blues legend Zola did not celebrate Craig Bellamy's goal. He said: "Inside I was very happy. But you have to give the Chelsea people respect as I love them."
